John Murphy launched his consulting practice, J. Murphy Strategies, on January 1, 2020.  This venture makes John’s unique skillset and management experience available to public and private companies and nonprofit organizations as they seek to refine and implement their business strategies as well as identify, grow, and nurture their next generation of leaders.  Specifically, John partners with clients on such issues as coaching senior executives, succession planning, lateral integration of key management personnel, organizational planning and communication, civic engagement, and conflict resolution.

Prior to establishing his consulting practice, John was immediate past chair of a major U.S. law firm and a renowned trial attorney.  John served as Chair of Shook, Hardy & Bacon L.L.P. for fifteen years, overseeing every facet of the firm’s business.  During his tenure, the firm opened new offices in Denver, Seattle, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Orange County, and became the first and only law firm to win the Association of Corporate Counsel’s Value Champion Award three times.  Additionally, the firm also was recognized for being one of the top ten firms in the nation for female attorneys, was the first recipient of the Altria’s Group Inc.’s Law Department Diversity and Inclusion Award, and received the Coca-Cola Company’s “Living the Values” diversity award on three separate occasions.  John’s career as a trial attorney and a chief executive gives him significant insights into the business, governance, and legal challenges that every company encounters.  John thrives at finding creative and practical solutions to complex issues.  He has been recognized as one of the best lawyers in America, as one of the top 100 managing partners you need to know, and one of the most powerful business leaders in Kansas City.
